En Estadio Coliseum, located in Getafe on the southern outskirts of Madrid, is one of the most recognisable football stadiums in Spanish La Liga. Home to Getafe CF, the stadium has witnessed the club’s remarkable transformation from a modest regional team into an established competitor in Spanish football. With a capacity of approximately 16,500 spectators, the Estadio Coliseum offers an intimate football atmosphere where supporters can experience the excitement of top-flight matches.
En Estadio Coliseum officially opened on 30 August 1998, marking an important milestone in Getafe CF’s history. Before moving into its new home, the club played at the historic Estadio Las Margaritas and subsequently at the Juan de la Cierva sports complex.
Originally known as the Coliseo Alfonso Pérez, the stadium was named after Alfonso Pérez Muñoz, a Spanish international footballer born in Getafe who represented clubs including Real Madrid, Real Betis and Barcelona.
In October 2023, the venue was officially renamed Estadio Coliseum, removing the former player’s name.
The stadium’s opening coincided with a period of significant sporting progress. Getafe achieved promotion to Spain’s second division in 1999 before securing a historic first promotion to La Liga in 2004. These achievements established the Coliseum as a symbol of the club’s ambitions.
Throughout its history, the Estadio Coliseum has hosted unforgettable encounters against some of Europe’s most prestigious football clubs.
One of the most memorable occasions came during the 2007–08 UEFA Cup campaign, when Getafe faced German giants Bayern Munich in a dramatic quarter-final. Despite an extraordinary performance, the Spanish side was eliminated after extra time.
The stadium also witnessed Getafe’s European debut against FC Twente in 2007, as well as encounters with Benfica, AEK Athens and Ajax.
Another historic moment arrived in 2017, when Getafe defeated Tenerife in the promotion play-offs to return to La Liga.
The Estadio Coliseum features distinctive blue seating reflecting Getafe CF’s traditional colours. Its compact design brings spectators close to the playing surface, creating an intense atmosphere during important fixtures.
The stadium includes a covered main stand, open seating sections, floodlighting and hospitality facilities. Its natural grass pitch measures approximately 105 by 70 metres.
Located on Avenida Teresa de Calcuta, the venue has been the subject of modernisation plans designed to improve spectator comfort and facilities.
Situated approximately 13 kilometres south of central Madrid, the stadium is accessible from the Spanish capital by public transport, including Cercanías commuter rail services connecting Madrid with Getafe.
Visitors attending football matches can also explore the surrounding municipality, known for its local restaurants, commercial areas and authentic Spanish atmosphere.
Watching Getafe CF at the Estadio Coliseum offers football supporters an opportunity to experience competitive Spanish football in a traditional stadium atmosphere.
Whether Getafe faces Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, Barcelona or another La Liga opponent, the Coliseum provides an exciting setting for unforgettable football occasions.
